Trillium Lakelands District School Board requesting mediation and arbitration to resolve contract dispute

LINDSAY, ON – Trillium Lakelands District School Board will be requesting arbitration of contract negotiations with the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) Local District 15, if scheduled mediation is unsuccessful.

TLDSB has already asked that the Ministry of Labour appoint a mediator to assist the parties in negotiating a local agreement for both the OSSTF Teachers/Occasional Teachers bargaining unit and the Professional Student Services Personnel (PSSP) bargaining unit.

The local OSSTF Teachers/Occasional Teachers bargaining unit has been engaging in strike action since November 4, 2015 following unsuccessful negotiations at our last meeting of November 3, 2015. The school board last met with the OSSTF PSSP bargaining unit on December 17, 2015 without reaching a tentative agreement. Mediation is currently scheduled for January 25th, 2016 with the PSSP group and February 4-5, 2016 with OSSTF Teachers /Occasional teachers.

TLDSB was among the first school boards in the province to reach local agreements with the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO), representing elementary teachers and occasional teachers, and with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) representing office, clerical, and technical support staff as well as educational assistants and custodial and maintenance employees.

“The local strike with secondary teachers and occasional teachers has gone on too long,” states board chair Louise Clodd, “We believe there is no reason local agreements cannot be reached with OSSTF as we have with ETFO and CUPE.”

In the best interest of students, staff, and school communities, the school board has proactively requested mediation and will formally request arbitration if mediation is unsuccessful with the local OSSTF.
