Due to the popularity of some contests at the Ontario Technological Skills Competition (OTSC), Skills Ontario has started to host pre-qualifying rounds because there were so many students taking interest. Each board is given a certain number of spots for the competition as well, and it is for that reason TLDSB hosted a pre-qualifying competition to see which students would represent the district at the provincial skills competition in Waterloo.
Students from Fenelon Falls and Bracebridge Muskoka Lakes high schools, in teams of four, competed in the home and shed building competition while students from the two high schools as well as Huntsville High School competed in transportation technology. Along with physically demonstrating their abilities and knowledge, competitors had to also take part in an interview round. Only one team and one individual were eligible to move on to the Skills Ontario competition taking place at RIM Park May 2 to 4, 2016.
In addition to the competition taking place in Fenelon Falls, local students attended a qualifier round at Georgian College on April 16 in categories like individual carpentry, culinary arts, small powered equipment, and welding. Since the Skills Ontario competition is also open to elementary students – those in grades 4 to 6 participate in team events with individual events open to grades 7 and 8 – the school board is giving local Grade 5 students an opportunity to get their feet wet as well. While their teenage counterparts are embroiled in pre-qualifying competition, 30 students from 14 different schools across the board will be taking part in their own skilled trades contest at the Kawartha Trades & Training Centre at Fleming College in Peterborough.
Results were as follows:
Home and Team Building – BMLSS students
Automotive Service Tech – Huntsville
Welding – Huntsville
Nick Barkwell – placed First
Culinary – Huntsville
Caitlyn Gill – placed First
Individual Carpentry – FFSS
Sean McNamee – place Second
The Wild Card spot in Welding was also given to Nathan Hossack from Huntsville.
Clearly we have some amazing talent from our board!
