More than 25 TLDSB schools participated in an Eco Summit in Haliburton on April 22, 2015. Elementary students from across Trillium Lakelands travelled to Camp Wanakita to celebrate Earth Day. Students enjoyed a full day of eco-friendly workshops led by Camp Wanakita staff, Fleming College Students, Kawartha Conservation, and the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH).
Numerous environmental stewardship activities were offered to the students including: animal adaptations, critter dip, invasive species, fresh water talk, tree identification, beaver dam hike, Iron Chef, bird feeding, and survival skills. Students learned the importance of preserving our fresh water resources, how to create a strong foundation when building a fire, and the benefits of fair traded goods. Team work and fun were key takeaways of the day, with low rope activities and group collaboration.
