TLDSB sees increase in math EQAO scores

LINDSAY, ON –  Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) has seen a 2 percent increase in Grade 3 and a 5 percent increase in Grade 6 math in recent Education Quality and Assessment Office (EQAO) assessment results. This is in spite of an overall decrease in math scores across the province.

TLDSB also continues to outperform the province in Grade 9 applied math with an increase over last year by 5 percent (13 percent above the province). For the first time in recent years the Board is also outperforming the province in academic math with an increase of 3 percent over last year’s result.

Literacy scores for the Board remain fairly consistent in Grade 3 and 6 with the exception of Grade 3 writing, which had a decline of 6 percent. Addressing the decrease in writing scores will be a priority for primary division grades. Data in specific areas will be reviewed, including the consideration for the close connection in the development of reading and writing skills, professional learning, and student support.

“We will continue to have high expectations for our students and for our staff as we continue our work in the development and student improvement in fundamental math skills,” said Director of Education Larry Hope. “However we know we cannot lose sight of our literacy skills development, especially for our youngest learners.”

Secondary school results for students with special needs have shown gains. Grade 9 academic math for students with special needs saw an increase of 17 percent and a 3 percent increase in applied level math. Students with special needs outperformed the province in Grades 3, 6, and 9 in all areas except for writing.

“We are encouraged by our gains in mathematics following the provision of intensive support for our students,” stated Board Chair Louise Clodd. “We commend the efforts of our staff and their unwavering support and commitment to student learning.”

More information on EQAO results may be found on the EQAO website.
