Power to Change Camp 2017

From May 4 – 6, 2017, students from grades 7 to 10 attended a ‘Power to Change’ camp at the Me to We Leadership Centre in Bethany, Ontario.TLDSB educators worked with partners from Free the Children to develop a program that would assist students to channel their leadership skills to make a difference in their own life, the life of their school, and the life of their community.The value in the Power to Change Camp is helping students to see their own potential not just by being a leader in their school community, but also becoming a leader in life.

Spencer West was also a keynote speaker, whose captivating story and personal charisma have enthralled and inspired audiences around the world. Students were able to listen as Spencer described his journey, from losing his legs from the pelvis down at the age of five, to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in his wheelchair and on his hands. Spencer shared his inspiring life lessons on how every student can tackle mountains and redefine what’s possible by finding opportunity in every challenge, overcoming obstacles, and creating positive change.

Students engaged in ice breaker activities, energizer games, and built up on their knowledge about issues which impact their local and global communities. Students were able to work on developing their leadership skills such as public speaking, and developing a personal action plan with the assistance of Me to We Facilitators.
