Specialist High Skills Majors

Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs allow students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector. While meeting the requirements to graduate from secondary school, students also gain industry recognized certifications which assist in their transition after graduation to apprenticeship training, college, university, or the workplace.

Benefit to students

SHSM programs allow students to identify, explore, and refine career goals and make informed decisions about their future. Students will customize their secondary school education to suit their interests and talents, and develop specialized knowledge and skills. Students earn credits and gain career-relevant training that post-secondary educational institutions and the sector recognize. All SHSM students earn First Aid, CPR, and WHMIS certification. Sector specific certifications include glassblowing, smart serve, lockout tagout, Canadian Welding Bureau SMAW Flat and GMAW Flat,  Working at Heights, and Professional Chainsaw Operation among others.
