Both the provincial Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO) and Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF) have announced strike action to begin on November 26, 2019. This will include all teachers in Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB).
The ETFO job action is a phase one withdrawal of administrative duties at school. For elementary teachers this includes, among other items, not participating in school board or Ministry of Education professional learning, not participating in school board planned activities for professional activity days, not participating on any board committees, and the non completion of term 1 report cards (although elementary teachers will provide school principals with a list of marks). Elementary teachers will participate in parent teacher interviews planned for November 27, 2019. This job action includes the board’s early childhood educators.
The OSSTF job action for secondary teachers includes, among other things, not participating in EQAO preparation, not completing Ministry of Education data reports, not participating in school board professional activities, and not providing comments on report cards. This job action also includes our professional student support workers such as speech and language pathologists and psycho educational consultants.
All other TLDSB staff are not included in this job action. A provincial agreement with CUPE has been realized and the school board is currently negotiating a local contract with CUPE, which includes TLDSB secretaries, educational assistants, custodians, clerks, technicians, and maintenance workers.
At this time, the job action by both ETFO and OSSTF should not impact student learning or families. Our priority will be the safety of students and staff in TLDSB buildings with optimal access to learning so that academic success and well-being may continue.
We hope that a provincial agreement with both ETFO and OSSTF can be reached very soon. Updates will be provided to you as more information becomes available. To find out the status of labour action in TLDSB visit www.tldsb.ca/labour-updates.
