On November 21, the IE Weldon Secondary School Mental Health Team, Wildcats for Wellness invited students from local elementary schools to attend the first-ever Mental Health Conference.
The overall goal of the Mental Health Conference was to provide students with positive mental health awareness skills and activities to take back to their schools.
The day began with students from Jack Callaghan Public School, Central Senior School, Rolling Hills Public School, Scott Young Public School, and Dunsford District Elementary School taking part in workshops focusing on mindfulness, yoga, and healthy eating.
In the afternoon, students participated in take-home activities, which involved making stress balls and positive affirmation canvases.
To end the day, each school group then worked together to create a mental health awareness plan to implement within their school.
“The Wildcats for Wellness team focuses on mental wellness instead of mental illness specifically, recognizing that while not everyone may suffer from a mental illness, everyone has mental health they need to look after,” said Wildcats for Wellness team member Grace Caffin. “We are hoping that the conference could become an annual event to help younger children learn that it’s okay to talk about feelings and how you are dealing with them.”
