Unique circumstances due to COVID-19
Due to the current closure of schools, the March 31 Regular Meeting of the Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) meeting was held via teleconference for trustees. This teleconference was broadcast through a live webcast on the TLDSB website.
On Tuesday, March 31, the Minister of Education announced an extension to the initial March 14 to April 5 school closures due to COVID-19. All TLDSB schools and buildings will continue to be closed until May 1 for staff and May 4 for students.
With the expectation that there would likely be an extension to school
closures, staff at TLDSB have been using the initial two-week shutdown to prepare a TLDSB Learning@Home framework. All staff were provided with an opportunity to give input into how to best support student learning at home. Teaching staff have since been asked to indicate their own access to technology devices and internet connectivity. Stage 1 of the framework has been shared with school staff and with school communities. This part of the plan is where teachers and schools are reaching out to families to determine the capacity for learning at home. This plan is intended to be ready for full implementation on Monday, April 6.
Superintendent of Learning Katherine MacIver shared with trustees an update on international travel for TLDSB schools. Educators work diligently to provide experiential learning for students. Some of these experiences involve excursions to various locations around the world. Due to the global outbreak of COVID-19, all international trips and provincial trips scheduled for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year were cancelled prior to March Break. It is part of TLDSB policy that trip insurance must be purchased for all international trips.
We continue to explore the possibility of continuing the Learn, Experience, Achieve, Discover (LEAD) program scheduled to take place in the summer. This program had originally included international travel but would be adjusted to take place locally or virtually. There will be a decision made about this closer to the summer, dependent on the global COVID-19 situation.
The TLDSB Staff Recognition Committee met remotely to review nominations received for Impact Award selection. Winners of 2020 Impact Awards of Excellence are:
- Administrative Leadership Impact Award – Dean Burke, King Albert Public School
- Support Staff Impact Award – Jennifer MacDonald (DECE), Muskoka Beechgrove Public School
- Teaching Impact Award – Pam Koekebakker, IE Weldon Secondary School
The annual Evening of Excellence and the TLDSB Retirement Dinner have both been cancelled due to school closures related to COVID-19.
