Fenelon Falls Secondary Students were able to take part in the process of making maple syrup in their second semester. Thanks in part to a program enhancement fund, Mrs. Carew’s class was able to use a continuous flow evaporator to boil sap. Students tapped maple trees on Fenelon Falls property and collected it in jugs. Then, students learned about filtering sap, filling the warming pan in the evaporator, maintaining levels of sap in the continuous flow pan, monitoring the temperature, and more.
During this unit students were encouraged to assess healing of trees that were tapped, identify if any needed plugs, and to use safe and responsible work practices when pruning trees.
