Previously known as the Sears Drama Festival, the National Theatre School (NTS) Festival is a theatre experience with a long standing tradition in Ontario schools. NTS encourages and celebrates student actors, directors, and technicians, and allowing them to learn more about theatre through performance opportunities. The Fenelon Falls Secondary School (FFSS) Drama program has a proud history of Festival participation with many students pursuing post secondary education and careers in theatre and other fine arts.
The FFSS cast and crew of Stephen Gregg’s chilling play One Lane Bridge, has been working together since November 2018 to bring this production to the stage. Directed by Senior Fine Arts Student Shaun Soutar, One Lane Bridge is a psychological thriller that tells the story of the main character, Eli, who is driving to town on a dark and stormy night. Throughout the play, Eli encounters various characters and the play unfolds with some terrible realities for both Eli and the audience.
To further showcase all of the cast and crew’s hard work this past March, the students traveled to The Academy Theatre in Lindsay to take part in the Kawartha District NTS Festival. FFSS was recognized for their performance and won an Award of Excellence for Outstanding Production. They also received many individual Awards of Excellence, including Sound and Lighting Design and Operation awarded to Shelby Richardson and Camryn Hardaker-Schabauer, Direction awarded to Shaun Soutar, and Ensemble Work awarded to the entire cast.
On April 26 to 28, the students also travelled to the Thousand Islands Theatre in Gananoque to participate in the Eastern Regional NTS Festival. During the Festival, FFSS students participated in theatre workshops, watched productions from other schools, and once again performed One Lane Bridge. Following a particularly strong and passionate performance, the FFSS cast and crew received another two Awards of Excellence – one to Shaun Soutar for Direction and one to the cast and crew for Interpretation of Script.
