On February 15, schools from Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) competed in the annual Cardboard Boat Races (CBR). This event provides Grade 8 students an opportunity to use problem-solving, teamwork, and design skills to create a seaworthy structure out of two sheets of cardboard and duct tape.
In past years, there have been separate events in the north and south regions of the board. This was the first year that the event brought the whole board together at the Bracebridge Sportsplex.
In total, 23 teams from 18 area schools competed to design and then float their boat to the podium, with Jack Callaghan Public School taking the top spot, and VK Greer Memorial Public School and Bobcaygeon Public School coming in second and third.
This year also brought a new partnership with Skills Ontario, which allowed for a first time Elementary Best in TLDSB TV Production Qualifier Competition. Teams of two Grade 7 and 8 students from Lady Mackenzie Public School, Bracebridge Public School, and Huntsville Public School used video cameras, tablets, phones, and GoPros to film the CBR event. The videos will be submitted to Skills Ontario, who will determine school ranking in competition with many other schools in Ontario.
The winning CBR team from Jack Callaghan Public School has been invited to compete at the Skills Ontario Provincial CBR event in Waterloo, and the winning TLDSB TV production team will be offered a space to compete at the Skills Ontario Competition in Toronto.
We wish both teams the best of luck as they move forward as representatives of TLDSB!
