Creating strong communities

A note from the Director of Education and Chair of the Board

Several years ago, Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) launched a character education initiative called “I am because of you.” The concept behind this initiative is a Nguni Bantu term “ubuntu,” which also translates to “I am because we are.”

Creating strong communities in TLDSB is not possible without all the members of our collective communities – our students of all ages and stages; our staff, including support staff, teachers, and administrators; our parents and guardians; our volunteers and community partners; as well as interested and invested community members. The interest, support, expertise, enthusiasm, and encouragement brings us to where we are today. We would not be who we are today without the strength of our communities.

Throughout this year’s annual report you will see examples of strong communities in action. From the Roots of Empathy program where babies visit classrooms to enhance empathy in children, to the many partnerships that make experiencing skilled trades possible for students, there are opportunities throughout the Board for students to learn beyond classroom academic rigour.

This is our opportunity to express our gratitude for the progress we have made over this year. We know that for some of our students coming to school can be a challenge. Providing support, resources, and opportunities for success to all our school families is a priority for TLDSB staff. We appreciate the passionate interest of our staff and our partners to help students succeed.

As we move into a new year and a new decade, we know that we will be able to continue to improve and provide the best educational experience and results for our students. This will occur when we create strong communities to support the needs and interests of everyone in the school community.
