The Education Quality Accountability Office (EQAO) assesses student achievement in reading, writing and mathematics in relation to Ontario Curriculum expectations. Results from EQAO tests complement information the school board obtains from classroom and other assessments. This information is used to provide school administrators, teachers, and system leaders a clear and comprehensive picture of student achievement within the district.

Our results this year showed consistency in Grade 6 assessments. However, Grade 3 results dropped in all three assessment areas – reading, writing, and math. Ongoing attention on math in TLDSB includes a focus on students with special needs for both Grade 3 and Grade 6 math. There is continued emphasis on professional development in math, and teachers make classroom changes connected to student assessment information. The board is currently piloting programs in secondary schools that are focused on key math skills using a new diagnostic tool.

TLDSB will continue to build on these results in the future by staying focused on the goals outlined in the Multi-Year Strategic Plan, ‘Embrace Learning’.
