The 2017 Boys Writers’ Conference took place on November 28, 2017 at Jack Callaghan Public School and saw 185 students from grades 4 – 8 from 15 schools across TLDSB. The conference was made possible through a project enhancement grant. The conference is intended to encourage a love for literacy for boys in the Junior and Intermediate grades. Presenters with a passion or storytelling (oral or written) are invited to present. Also, presenters with a passion for illustration to bring the written word to life are invited, too. The boys’ engage in talks and workshops to support the development of story.
Schools return year after year with great excitement for the conference; giving the opportunity to boys who might be at risk other areas. Since this writers’ conference, literacy scores in males have shown an increase.
Special guests from the day included Philip Roy, author; Dan yashinsky, storyteller, with Maker Space workshops run by Mr. Smith and Mr. Reynolds. Special thanks to Shannon Smith for all of her hard work coordinating.
