Writers’ Conference Sees 185 Boys Participate

The 2017 Boys Writers’ Conference took place on November 28, 2017 at Jack Callaghan Public School and saw 185 students from grades 4 – 8 from 15 schools across TLDSB. The conference was made possible through a project enhancement grant. The conference is intended to encourage a love for literacy for boys in the Junior and Intermediate grades. Presenters with a passion or storytelling (oral or written) are invited to present. Also, presenters with a passion for illustration to bring the written word to life are invited, too.¬† The boys’ engage in talks and workshops to support the development of story.

Schools return year after year with great excitement for the conference; giving the opportunity to boys who might be at risk other areas. Since this writers’ conference,¬†literacy scores in males have shown an increase.¬†

Special guests from the day included Philip Roy, author; Dan yashinsky, storyteller, with Maker Space workshops run by Mr. Smith and Mr. Reynolds. Special thanks to Shannon Smith for all of her hard work coordinating.
