Over 165 families and 30 educators attended ‘Take Me Outside to Learn’, an event hosted by TLDSB at Macauley Public School on May 2, 2015.
The day included an adventure in the forest, with engaging activities in the woods that embraced the head, heart, and hands approach to outdoor learning.
The public was invited to explore the possibilities of learning outside by taking their child on a learning journey through the forest. Each family embarked on a self-guided walk through nature, visiting learning stations along the way. Parents, children and educators received a map and started out on a morning of woodland fun and education. Participants used the map to look for treasure, used their journey stick to document their learning, experienced the beauty of nature and trees, worked with clay, read a book , sang songs, stretched their muscles in the outdoors and created woodland art.
A boxed lunch and transportation was also included for those that needed it. Overall, the event was a great success. Educators were invited to stay for a keynote address by Diane Kashin, a forest school practitioner and author. Educators had the opportunity to consider pedagogy behind taking students outside for learning and the emergent curriculum.
