More than three schools, four classes and 120 kids in grades 7 and 8 participated in an entrepreneurial showdown in Bracebridge on March 6, 2015. Students from Macauley, Monck, and Watt public schools have been working together since December to learn how a business works, and to develop their ideas into business plans. Once their projects were complete, the students presented their visions in front of a panel of ‘Dragons’.
The judges were a combination of business owners and community members who are professional leaders. They provided feedback in terms of creativity, imagination, and effectiveness of their pitches.
Peter Yungblut, an instructional leader who works for Trillium Lakelands District School Board, stated that not only was this an educational experience, it was a great way to have the kids connect with each other. The project involved ice breakers, virtual meetings, and fostered awareness of digital citizenship. Additionally, this project enabled students to develop relationships before proceeding into high school – a great way to recognize faces for the start of grade 9.
