On Thursday May 8th 2014, IE Weldon Secondary School hosted the annual TLDSB skipping competition. Students from elementary and secondary schools across the board competed in different categories to judge their skipping abilities. The students marched into the gym at 9:00 a.m., as parents and friends sat on the side lines eager to watch their loved ones skip their hearts out. Some high school students volunteered their time to “click” as the younger students jumped, watching each right foot hit the ground. Accuracy is definitely the key in this situation – there were 2 to 4 clickers per jumper!
As the students sat down in the big gym at IE Weldon SS, Mrs. Rowbotham stood at the front and got everyone together. A booming voice echoed throughout the gym, and everyone went silent. Medals for “most enthusiastic” or “most spirited” skipper were handed out at the beginning of the day, along with the opening ceremony. It was obvious to everyone in attendance that the day was not only for competition, but also for fun and friendship. The students were encouraged to do their best, and whatever their best is this year, it could only get better next year! Everyone was excited to start the day, and ready to begin once Mrs. Rowbotham said GO!
At the end of the day, even though it was a competition, every student who participated left IE Weldon SS with something they didn’t have when they arrived. Whether they won a medal or not, every student was happy- proud of their accomplishments and glad to be a part of what is sure to be one of the most fun days of their young athletic careers. TLDSB wishes to thank everyone who helped to make this day so memorable for all that were involved – from the volunteers to the parents, every little bit of help is appreciated when it comes to the health and wellness of our students.
