What is Trillium Lakelands Arts Camp?
Trillium Lakelands DSB offers an arts camp for students in Grades 7 to 12 (TLAC). The camp takes place in May. It offers specialized instruction for Music, Drama, Music Theatre, Dance, and Visual Art within an exciting camp experience.
What is the history of Trillium Lakelands Arts Camp?
In June 2002, twenty Trillium Lakelands District School Board students attended the Durham Integrated Arts Camp at Camp White Pine in Haliburton, Ontario. The purpose of this was to provide an opportunity for music students from grades 7-12 to enhance their skills in an enriched environment while enjoying the camp experience. Durham's camp had approximately 350 students at this time.
The following year, Trillium Lakelands students attended once again. At this time it was proposed that Trillium Lakelands District School Board consider developing a camp based on the Durham model.
The TLAC (Trillium Lakelands Arts Camp) committee began Trillium Lakelands own dynamic camp with 124 students in June 2005. We now have approximately 300 students attend each year.
What can you expect if you attend TLAC?
The arts camp is set up as a typical high school day with 4 periods. Students attending have proficient skills in either instrumental music, concert band, instrumental jazz music, music theatre, dance, or visual arts.
Periods twoand three are major ensemble periods and include opportunities where students can participate in concert band, digital photography, music theatre, painting, etc.
Minor arts electives provide detailed instruction in the student's particular instrument. For example a flutist can participate in a flute choir, a music theatre major can take part in a group drama activity, or a visual artist can choose painting, sculpture, or pottery. The other elective is a physical education component.
Physical education options include cycling, kayaking, canoeing, water skiing, tennis, swimming, and a sports medley.
There is a free-time period following period four when students study, swim, read, play games, etc. Three nutritious meals are included each day as well as a snack before bed.
There is a nightly evening concert in the Pinetages Theatre featuring fantastic performances from major artists. The May 2012 TLAC included Masked Messenger, Shyanne Hovorka, and Odessey. Each evening concert begins with an art display and presentation from a local visual artist. This gives the students a chance to appreciate art forms and become familiar with artists within the Trillium Lakelands District School Board.
A supervised study hall is provided every evening from 10 to 11 p.m.
