Inmates inspired by art contest
Each year, Trillium Lakelands District School Board donates art supplies to the winner of the Central East Correctional Centre’s Art Contest. This year, 20 inmates participated in the contest and were given a golf pencil and a long white envelope to draw their own interpretation of the theme 'new beginnings'. The winner of the contest will receive the donated art supplies upon leaving the institution.
Children’s Pioneer Garden Program
Each year from April to June, the Bobcaygeon and District Horticultural Society works with grade 3 students at Bobcaygeon Public School teaching them how to revitalize soil, plant seeds, and maintain a pioneer garden. This project is known as the Children’s Pioneer Garden program.
EA Honoured with Heather Penny Award
Educational Assistant, Cheryl Tass is an exceptional role model and advocate for student success at LCVI. Her passion for student achievement and engagement inspired her colleagues to nominate her for the Heather Penny Award. Last week, the Learning Disabilities Association of Peterborough announced that she was the 2013 award recipient. The Heather Penny Award is presented to an educational assistant or child and youth worker who has made an outstanding contribution to student life.
TLDSB student making a difference in education
IE Weldon Secondary School student, Chase Woon, has been chosen to be a member of the Minister of Education’s Student Advisory Council. Every year, one or two students are chosen from each school board across Ontario to be a part of the council – there are 62 council members this year. All members will have an opportunity to share their ideas and concerns directly with Ontario’s Minister of Education, Liz Sandals.
Teachers encourage student’s talent with Art Show
“Tristen continually shows a passion for drawing animals and places all around the world.” He has an “amazing knowledge of all these different places and animals” and he can “instantly put them onto canvas or via the computer or sketches in such detail.” This is how Darryl Scott, Life Skill teacher at Huntsville High School, described one of his students, Tristen Metcalf. As a teacher, Darryl is encouraging Tristen’s talent.
Outdoor classroom breaks ground
While Director of Education, Larry Hope was visiting Gravenhurst Public School on Friday, May 17th, a picture was taken to celebrate the soon-to-be created outdoor classroom. This outdoor classroom has been a vision for Gravenhurst PS’s School Council and will soon be a reality. It will have stone benches, picnic tables, a wood chip foundation, and beautiful shrubbery planted around the perimeter. With the help of the community, Gravenhurst Bike Club and Muskoka Rock, and school volunteers, Lindsay Donaldson and Chris Harrison, the outdoor classroom project will be completed next week.
Glen Orchard PS jumps for Heart & Stroke
Glen Orchard Public School in Port Carling held its annual Jump Rope for Heart | Hoops for Heart event last week. Students were inspired to get physically activity, eat well, and become heart healthy while hula hooping and skipping the day away. They also learned the importance of giving back to their community and helping others in need, and most importantly, they had fun!
Reclaimed wood funds technology class
Grade 9 students in the Exploring Technology class at Haliburton Highlands Secondary School constructed four arbors. The arbors were created from reclaimed trees from their teacher, Mr. Borgdorff’s property. Mr. Borgdorff, a licenced general carpentor, taught his students the mortise and tenon technique to construct the arbors. The class will be selling the arbors for $100 each and all the proceeds will help fund the program. If you are interested in purchasing an arbor, you can call the school at 705-457-2950.
Great things are happening at Cardiff ES
It has been at busy month at Cardiff Elementary School. On May 23, 2013, they held their annual school-wide Jump Rope for Heart event and raised $1754.00 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The following day (May 24) Cardiff ES welcomed new students and their parents to their Welcome to Kindergarten orientation. Students were also practicing all month long for their track and field meet that was in Halliburton over the weekend. "Only in cottage country do you practice for track wearing bug jackets,” joked principal Barb Davies.
Mindfulness Martial Arts
Haliburton Highlands Secondary School focuses on the importance of mental health with their pilot program, Mindfulness Martial Arts. With funding from Trillium Lakelands District School Board and a partnership with Point in Time, Haliburton Highlands SS teacher, Martin Gage and Point in Time representative, Linda Mintz were sent to Toronto for 20 weeks of training with Integra – a children’s mental health centre leading in the treatment of vulnerable children and youth with learning disabilities. Martin, who has a 3rd degree black belt in okinawa goju and has studied ki jitsu and yoga, and Linda have been successfully running the pilot mindfulness martial arts program at Haliburton Highlands SS since the fall with hopes of expanding the program to other schools next year.
