Girl Power
“You are amazing and you can do anything you set your mind to.” This was the message that the teachers from Jack Callaghan and Queen Victoria were trying to get across to their students at the Girl Power assembly. Attending the assembly was Constable Tammy Brydon of Kawartha Lakes Police, Trillium Lakelands District School Board Chair Karen Round, and Andrea Wakelin. These three inspiring women talked about their lives as women and hoped to encourage the young females to believe in themselves.
Doo Wop Wed Widing Hood comes to life at Monck PS
On Thursday, May 10th, grade 6 and 7 students of Monck PS performed a 1950’s rock-n-roll fairy tale musical in their gymnasium. The musical opened with a fast-paced, upbeat song, Doo Wop Wed Widing Hood (which is also the same name as the show). Students in colourful costumes danced and sang on stage. Other cast members burst into the scene from the left and right sides of where the audience sat, dancing past and in front of the audience, singing their way up steps, onto the stage.
Social justice in schools
Students at Trillium Lakelands Districts School Board are learning about social justice and the challenges youth around the world face every day. A grade 6 class at Dr. George Hall Public School learned about child labour and the story behind the clothing they wear. For a class project, students designed a piece of clothing and had to decide where they were going to have it manufactured. It didn’t take long for the students to realize how much cheaper it would be to manufacture their clothing in another country, but they would have to sacrifice children their age producing their designs. That means that these children will be working long hours, with minimum pay, and will not be able attend school. This project sprouted serious group discussions as each student weighed the pros and cons of child labour and revenue.
James Wegner competes at Skills Ontario!
James Wegner competed at The Ontario Technological Skills Competition last week in Waterloo. After a long day of heating, bending, and fusing James finished 8th overall in the Welding contest. This places James top 20 in the Province! Congratulations James!
Girls Night Out empowers Pine Glen PS students
On Thursday, May 3rd, seven Pine Glen Public School students each made a silk screen t-shirt featuring a design of their choice such as a turtle, dancer, bunny, and wolf. This was their third Girls Night Out together. The Girls Night Out event, part of the ETFO social justice and equity program, was lead by Mrs. Teri Brunner, Learning Disabilities Program Teacher at Pine Glen PS.
Wilberforce Supports Pedal For Hope Cycling Tour
Intense breathing and tiresome peddle strokes echoed throughout the Haliburton Highlands as the Cops for Cancer Pedal For Hope cycling team persevered to reach the top of Vinegar Hill – the steepest hill they would climb during their 1,000 km cycling tour. Thankfully it was all smooth sailing from there as the team made their way to Wilberforce Elementary School on Wednesday May 2, 2012.
Northern Lights Leadership
The annual Northern Lights Leadership Camp was no less energetic than in other years. Pairs of Grade 7 and Grade 10 students from schools throughout TLDSB gathered last week at the Kinark Outdoor Education Centre to focus on leadership skills.
Student Leadership Conference
The 2011-2012 Group of Seven planned and organized the April 27th Student Leadership Conference - held at Kinark Outdoor Education Centre. 12 students from each secondary school in the Board gathered to focus on leadership. This event was also the first time that newly elected Group of Seven representatives from each school met their counterparts from across the board. Keynote speaker from Me to We, Scott Hammell, held his audience spellbound with magic tricks interspersed with an inspirational message about stepping out of your comfort zone to lead and inspire. Students spent the afternoon working together on leadership games, reflections, and discussions. The culminating activity was the announcement of the school board 2012-2013 Student Trustee ... Hana Ready from LCVI.
Freedom from Poverty at GPS
Throughout the week of April 16th to 20th, Gravenhurst Public School's Student Leaders comprised of our We Day group and our school leadership team, the BIGs, (the Beyond Imagining Grizzlies) co-planned and facilitated several school activities during the Five Days for Freedom. The students showed tremendous initiative, enthusiasm, and devotion to the follow through of their plan. They were effective in combining global issues with local awareness and local solutions.
Pedal For Hope team visits Parkview PS
On Friday, April 27, 2012, Parkview Public School students and community members lined the front of the school cheering as the Cops for Cancer Pedal For Hope team cycled in. Over 350 students greeted the team with a loud roar of support, and inside the school the Pedal For Hope team shared their journey with the students and relayed their important message about cancer prevention.
Parkview PS exceeded their goal of $5,000 raising over $10,000 in support of Paediatric Cancer Research. Throughout the month of April students and staff organized a number of fundraising events, from raffle ticket sales to face painting, there were many opportunities for students and staff to get involve and support the fight to end cancer. There were even head shaving supporters at the Pedal For Hope assembly, like Fenelon Falls Secondary School principal, Katherine MacIver, who braved the razor in support of Connor Hope, a student at Parkview PS.
In 2005, the Peterborough Chapter of Cops for Cancer took on a new identity. The Pedal For Hope Cycling Team was born and local children fighting cancer had a new support team behind them! Local police personnel, a retired N.H.L. hockey player and a great crew of support personnel have been dedicating time to this worthy cause.
Starting in late April for 3 weeks, the Pedal For Hope team cycles over 1,000 kilometres, visiting local schools and delivering a message about kids living with cancer. For more information visit www.pedalforhope.com
