Fenelon Falls Secondary School is now offering the Construction Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program! Last year, Construction Teacher Tom McMorrow, SHSM Lead Mike McIntosh, District Principal David Sornberger, and Pathways Consultant, Tim McAlpine applied to the Ministry of Education to add the SHSM Construction program to their offerings for this school year. Fenelon Falls SS also offers SHSM programming in Transportation.

“The students are excited about the new program,” said Construction Teacher, Tom McMorrow. “They’re graduating from Fenelon with the highly sought-after (SHSM) Red Seal that they can use in the workplace right away.”

“Like all SHSM programs, the new Construction SHSM supports students by focusing them on a customized career path,” said District Principal David Sornberger. “This increases our students’ competitiveness with employers and post-secondary institutions as soon as they graduate.”

SHSM programs are for Grade 11 and 12 students. Each SHSM student takes 8 to 10 senior course credits with a career path focus that matches their skills and interests while meeting the requirements of the Ontario secondary school diploma. Students who are interested in pursuing a pathway to apprenticeship training, college, university, or the workplace will gain on-the-job experiences from employers through the SHSM program.
