TLDSB Students get "Homework Help" in Math

LINDSAY, ON – This year, math students in Grades 7 to 10 will have access to live interactive online math assistance from a site called Homework Help. As part of the Ontario Ministry of Education e-Learning strategy, at no cost to families, the Homework Help site is offering real-time math tutoring by certified Ontario teachers. Launched this week in Trillium Lakelands District School Board, students will be registering in their math classrooms, picking a unique password, and taking information home.

When students sign into Homework Help they remain completely anonymous and cannot interact with one another at any time. This safe and anonymous chat is a one-on-one tutoring session with an Ontario College of Teachers certified teacher. The Tutor Chat Rooms will be open five nights a week – Sunday through Thursday from 5:30 to 9:30 pm.

"We are very excited about Homework Help – it has the potential to build confidence for our students in math," stated Director of Education, Larry Hope, "Often parents find it difficult to help students with some of the math concepts being studied – Homework Help offers a strategy that can be encouraged in the home as well as at school."

Resources available on the website include common examples of questions that are asked, interactive lessons, mini-quizzes, printable presentation notes, as well as colourful, animated tutorials. There is a "virtual locker" where student chat sessions are saved and easily accessed, a "scientific calculator" if a handheld calculator is not available to the student, and a glossary which provides student-friendly definitions. These resources are available 24/7 so students have the opportunity to develop numeracy skills at any time.

Students, each with a unique username and password will login to www.homeworkhelp.ilc.org to get the help they need for Grade 7 to 10 mathematics.
