For many of us, particularly in education, there are a couple of times in the year where we can say we have a “new beginning.” The start of a school year is an obvious time for a renewed sense of anticipation for a fresh start, a new grade, a new group of students, perhaps a new school, and so on. There is the obvious new beginning when we move from one calendar year to the next. This is the time where many folks, from all walks of life, put plans in place for change – usually to do with their well-being such as a commitment to healthy eating or an exercise program.

At Trillium Lakelands District School Board, we are embarking on a different sort of new beginning. Following the Municipal elections held in October of this year, a new group of school board trustees were elected or acclaimed by their community. For us this means a sad farewell to two trustees who did not run in the recent election, and a warm welcome to two new trustees – Steve Binstock for the Town of Bracebridge, and David Morrison for wards 5, 9, and 11 in the City of Kawartha Lakes.

When you have worked with a board for their four year term, you get to know each individual trustee very well. We are going to miss the contributions made by Judith Hayes and Tony Armstrong and on behalf of all of us; we wish them all the best.

The new 2014 to 2018 school board begin their term today, December 1st, 2014, and will be sworn in as trustees at our December 9th inaugural and organizational meeting. All members of the public are invited to attend this meeting which takes place at the Lindsay Education Centre at 6:30 p.m. with video conference access from Bracebridge and Minden.

I am looking forward to working with our new board of trustees: From the City of Kawartha Lakes – Don Alton, John Byrne, David Morrison, Karen Round, and Judy Saunders; from the District of Muskoka – Steve Binstock, Louise Clodd, and Bruce Reain; and from Haliburton County – Gary Brohman. All of these individuals have a passion for education and work diligently to support all that we do for student engagement and achievement, staff engagement and development, and parent/community engagement.

Please join me in welcoming our 2014-2018 trustees to our board, our schools, and our events.
