It is when students find the strength to emerge from their little cocoons that they evolve from caterpillars and take flight as beautiful butterflies.

During the month of August, Alexandra Public School parent, Sherry Knox, spearheaded the construction of two exceptional outdoor classrooms. These classrooms will give students the opportunity to embrace the outdoors and learn about different species of insects, plants, and trees.

With the help of Gaming Nature Centre, Rockwood Forest Nurseries, Porter Landscape Products, Beverly Turf Farms Ltd., and Pineridge Landscaping, the outdoor classrooms have given students the opportunity to engage in learning in their natural environment.

Whether it’s enjoying classes outside with its waterproof chalkboards or learning how each plant attracts different species of butterflies in the garden, the classrooms offer a variety of outdoor learning opportunities. A pumpkin patch has also been created and even cedars along the fence-line to drown out traffic and make the school a more nature friendly environment. Alexandra PS has plans to expand the garden and offering even more outdoor education opportunities in the future.
